The meaning of Easter
23/03/2008 by James.
Matthew 28:1-15
INTRO: What is the meaning of Easter? Ask any child: “Easter is Easter bunnies and Easter eggs.” Ask any mother: “Easter is new Easter clothes.” Ask any dad: “Easter is a good Easter dinner.”
Is the preacher the only one who responds, “Easter is the celebration of Jesus’ resurrection!”? We have turned from an empty tomb to an Easter egg, and the symbol of the Easter bunny has displaced the cross. The real meaning of Easter escapes us. Can we recapture it?
I. EASTER MEANS CHRIST IS LORD (v. 6).
The angel at the tomb told the women, “He is not here: for He is risen” (v. 6). If Easter means anything, it means Jesus Christ is Lord. He has authority over life, death and salvation.
The Scriptures stress that Jesus actually rose from the dead. The apostle Paul declared this fact as the basis of his personal faith and listed as proof many eyewitnesses of Christ’s resurrection (1 Cor. 15:5-8). The empty tomb convinced Jesus’ disciples of His lordship, for He was “declared to be the Son of God with power, by the resurrection from the dead” (Rom. 1:4). If His body had remained in Joseph’s family plot, another prophet would have passed this way, but no Savior.
The message of Easter is that Jesus is alive. Christ is our living Lord. He has the power to resurrect us from “death unto life” (John 5:24).
ILLUS: To carry the news of the Battle of Waterloo to England, a sailing ship signaled to a man on shore, who relayed the word to another on a hill, and so on across Britain. The first word, Wellington, was signaled. The next word was defeated. Then a fog closed in, and the message halted.
Across England people wept over the message. “Wellington defeated.” Then the fog lifted. The communication continued with two additional words: “the enemy.” Englishmen celebrated the victory.
There was great sorrow when the body of Jesus was carried from the cross to the tomb. The signal seemed to say, “Jesus Christ defeated.” But three days later the fog lifted and the angel announced, “Jesus Christ defeated the enemy.”
II. EASTER MEANS MAN HAS MAJESTY (v. 7).
The first visitors to the tomb were instructed, “Go quickly and tell His disciples” (v. 7). The baffled believers needed to know not only for understanding, but also to remind them their resurrection was inseparable from His. “Christ the firstfruits” (1 Cor. 15:23) was Paul’s way of affirming that Jesus’ victory over death is our triumph also.
Jesus came to bring life — new spiritual life to all who believed (John 10:10). His resurrection is both a promise and provision. To know Christ personally means to be resurrected with Him (Rom. 6:4-6) and to live with a higher morality (Col. 3:10-17). Easter means that any person may become a child of God through the resurrection power of Christ (2 Cor. 5:17).
ILLUS: At the close of WWI, the French Army had hundreds of soldiers suffering from amnesia because of shell shock. A faulty record system lost the identity of these war victims.
To find their families and return them to their homes, an “Identification Rally” was scheduled in Paris. Thousands of relatives of the missing gathered in a great plaza. One by one, the men were led to a central platform to speak these words: “Is there anyone here who can tell me who I am?”
Jesus Christ died and rose again to tell us who we really are: sons of GOD!
III. EASTER MEANS LIFE HAS MEANING (v. 10).
To the worshiping women, the risen Christ said, “Go and tell my brethren to go to Galilee” (v. 10, RSV). The mission of the twelve continued.
Through man’s disobedience sin entered the world. A contagious germ contaminated human history. The real meaning and purpose of life was perverted. A second Adam was needed to transform this tragedy into triumph. The death and resurrection of Christ restored to fallen mankind the means to rediscover and fulfill life’s purpose.
CONC: “The Christ event”, writes William Hull, “began with life from an empty womb and ended with life from an empty tomb. Empty womb, empty tomb — what is this if not a description of the God who creates things that are, out of things that are not and who can make dead things come to life again.”
This indeed is the meaning of Easter. Christ alive in you!

HOORAY AND HAPPY EASTER EVERYONE
22/03/2008 by Ted.
For me this is the best time of the year. It has everything going for it - the winter is past, the flowers are here again, the shrubs and bushes and trees are beginning to sprout leaves and a year full of hope and anticipation lies ahead. And today is an especially nice day too. In the Christian calendar it is called Holy Saturday -the day between Good Friday when Jesus was crucified and Easter Sunday, the day of His glorious resurrection from the dead. There is a stillness about the day and I always tingle with anticipation on Holy Saturday because I know what follows.
I know I said I wasn’t going to go on about Jesus on the Family News side of the blog, (just in the INNER ROOM - link on the right panel) but just let me share this with you. Read it slowly and just try and catch the atmosphere of of how these guys felt as these events happened.
John 20:1-20
20:1 Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!”
So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in.
Then Simon Peter, who was behind him, arrived and went into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, as well as the burial cloth that had been around Jesus’ head. The cloth was folded up by itself, separate from the linen.
Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed.(They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.)
Then the disciples went back to their homes, but Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot.
They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?” “They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.”
At this, she turned round and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realise that it was Jesus.
”Woman,” he said, “why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?”Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.”
Jesus said to her, “Mary.”
She turned towards him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher).
Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet returned to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am returning to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’”
Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: “I have seen the Lord!”
On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” After he said this, he showed them his hands and side.
The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.
WOW!!!!!!
Have a lovely Easter,
Love to you all,
Ted.

THE INNER ROOM
19/03/2008 by Ted.
Hi everyone,
On the right we have a new link to THE INNER ROOM.
Family members will probably have already realised that I think that a life lived with Jesus is, to mis-coin a phrase, the best thing since before sliced bread, and I like to make this known when I can - including on the blog.
However the purpose of this blog is for family members to keep in touch - as is our blog motto - see top of blog! I also realise that some family members do not share my convictions about Jesus and might therefore consider it an imposition to use our Family - keeping in touch - Blog to share these convictions. (Quote: “Oh no, there he goes again!”)
So ……… we now have in the column on the right a link to THE INNER ROOM which is still a part of the Blog. It is a Christian place where I will be able to share and explain the things which make Jesus so precious to me - and millions of others. He really is special. If you want to know how click on the BE A WINNER link on the right.
Anyway, that is enough of that. Feel free, family and visiting friends, to click on THE INNER ROOM and see what is going on. We’ll see how it goes.
In the meantime I have uploaded another hundred or so photos which I found when I was sorting out mum’s personal things, and there are still fifty or so to be uploaded. Have fun. Go to the family website www.talbotfamily.org.uk and then click on the Family History Photos link to get at them.
Love to all,
Ted.

A breath of Spring
14/03/2008 by Ted.
Friday 14th March 2008. Hi families.
I had a trip out to Baystone Bank this morning. I was greeted by one of the farm staff who asked if I was fishing while I still had chance. When I enquired about what he had said he told me that the water authority was planning to drain and fill in the reservoir next year. Well, that was a sad start to my trip but then I didn’t catch any fish either, although a bloke across the reservoir was pulling them out as if there was no tomorrow. So eventually I consoled myself with a walk around the reservoir perimeter and had a lovely time.
There were masses of wild primroses growing along the bank of the Baystone beck and “hosts” of wild daffodils were everywhere. The air was filled with bird-song, the sun was shining and it was truly lovely. What a wonderful time of year this is with everything “coming to life again”. I realised that I hadn’t been able to enjoy the countryside in such a leisurely fashion for ages. It was a really beautiful experience. And then home for a salmon steak for lunch instead of a trout.
So here is a picture of some of the daffodils. I hope they are a blessing to you as they were to me
Love to all
Ted
PS. In retrospect I wonder now whether the water authority would really cart a reservoir’s worth of soil etc half way up a small mountain along unmade farm roads just to fill in the reservoir when there are literally dozens of open lakes many times larger than the reservoir all over the county which are left full of water and fish without any trouble at all. It would be lunacy to do so ……… but then, sadly, in this day and age and country I suppose that makes it more likely that they will do just that!

How about a feed?
11/03/2008 by Ted.
Another discovery! If you click on www.talbotfamilyblog.org.uk/feed/ it will bring up a page which enables you to register the blog as a feed to your computer. Updates are then automatically downloaded to your computer and may be viewed via Internet Explorer etc. It may save time for for some of the poor unfortunate kinfolk who have still to go out to work for their livings. The page brought up by the above link explains it all. Love to all.

More news from Barrow
09/03/2008 by Ted.
Sunday 9th March 2008. A lovely day here in Barrow again - a bit breezy perhaps but plenty of sunshine.
I popped into Barrow park again this morning and saw a beautifully rigged sailing boat voyaging across the park lake. It was too small for there to be anyone on board and yet is was tacking and sailing against the wind and doing everything that a full sized boat with crew does. I watched it for a while and then noticed a gentleman in a woolly hat (and some other clothes of course) standing at the side of the lake twiddling with something. So, as is my way, I approached the gentleman and saw that he was “twiddling” with a radio control handset and it was he who was making the boat perform its wonderful manoeuvres. We opened a conversation during which he asked me if I would like a go. Wow! So I did and found that it really was easy to control the boat. The radio operates servos which move the sails and rudder, and after a few minutes I was chasing very confused geese around the lake with no trouble at all.
By this time a small crowd of one other gentleman had gathered who seeing my delight at my success said that he had an almost finished one-metre boat which he did not require, and he would bring it along to the park next Sunday for me to have a look at if I was interested - which I was, so he is. I had apparently stumbled across the Sunday meeting of the Barrow Model Boat Club. I asked if the boats were suitable for sailing on Windermere and they said that that was one of their favourite sailing locations.
I am now eagerly awaiting next Sunday morning, and in the meantime have put in a bid of £20 for a one-metre R/C yacht on E-bay, which auction closes in two days time.
As well as chasing geese around Barrow Park Lake (a pretty tame sport, really) I am now considering adding this to my fishing repertoire. In the past I have hired a rowing boat on Windermere and have rowed along the lake with my fishing rod over the back of the boat. In this way I have caught pike and sea trout. I am now considering doing the same without hiring a boat, but with a length of fishing line and spinner attached to the rear of my one-metre sailing boat which will be controlled by me from the shore of Lake Windermere. There could be problems if I hook a twenty-pound pike or something, but I think it may be worth a try. Also it is probably illegal as the fishing licence is for one “rod” and not “one R/C sailing boat” - though I suppose if I have a diddy rod holding the length of line on the boat that would fit the bill. I will, of course, let you know how I get on!
I hope everyone is OK. Peter confirms that he and Barbara are now back from Lanzarote and Bob that his house is on the market. Also Andrew will be putting his boat in the water for the summer so I am looking forward to being able to have a trip out with him this year - on a “real boat”. I also spoke with Richard who is tonight returning to work with aches and pains after a week’s holiday - digging out tree roots. Ouch! And Alan says that if I put all the black and white photos on a disc and let him have them he will edit out all the marks and scratches. What a lovely brother. Thank you Alan.
That’s all for now - more soon
Much love to everyone,
Ted.

A new discovery
07/03/2008 by Ted.
7 March 2008. Hi everyone. I have just discoved that it is possible to enlarge and reduce the size of the typeface and images on the blog posts by scrolling the wheel on the mouse while depressing the Crtl key on the bottom left hand corner of the keyboard. You can do the same by hitting the + and - keys on the keyboard while depressing the Crtl key.
It does wonders with the photographs!
Love to all,

Happy everything to everybody
05/03/2008 by Ted.
Greetings family members. Spring appears to be sprung at last with daffodils all over the place - not to mention a few hailstones here and there.
I am located in Barrow at the present time looking after Grace. For those who don’t already know, I ran her back to Barrow from mum’s funeral and she promptly had a heart attack (must be the way I drive!) so I have been hospital visiting and housekeeping down here since then. Now however she is out of hospital and on a week’s convalescence before resuming normal duties. So, all being well, I should also be able to get back to normal next week.
Peter and Barbara are away in foreign parts at present - until Thursday I think - somewhere called Lanzarote. And Bob in Bridlington is preparing his house for going on the market I understand. At this end I will be sorting out the things from mum’s room at St. George’s. I just piled the stuff into boxes and dumped them on the bed in my spare room until after the funeral and, of course, they are still there. I will also have to sort out the headstone and flowers on (now) dad and mum’s grave and also show my face at St. George’s.
It is a grey day here in Barrow but yesterday was lovely sunshine and quite warm with it. I had a walk in Barrow park. It is coming to life now with spring plants blooming and hundreds, if not thousands, of birds - geese, seagulls, ducks, water hens, and myriads of blackbirds, chaffinches, sparrows and so on. There is a show greenhouse there filled with a wonderful array of plants. I wandered in for a nosey and the fragrance from the flowers was lovely. I am really looking forward to the coming months as everything comes to life again after the winter and it gets (hopefully) WARMER !
In 2007 we had 19,643 visitors to the blog and this year numbers are running at around 2000 per month. I suspect that they are not all immediate family members so remember that if you put a post on the blog do not include personal information such as e-mail addresses, telephone numbers etc. But apart from that keep on blogging and sharing news so that we can keep in touch with each other. If you are not into posting let me know your news and I will post it for you. Remember the Blog motto - The Talbot Family - keeping in touch! Okay, that’s all for now.
Love to all

Talk at mum’s funeral
01/03/2008 by Ted.
As requested and as promised herewith the text of the talk at mum’s funeral:
Pru, little mum, loves Jesus.
Best of all, Jesus loves little mum.
And, best of all again, Jesus loves you too.
Since mum went many people have remarked on her beautiful nature. She would be the first to admit that it was her daily life with Jesus, her friend, that made her into the kind, caring, gentle, loving, understanding person that she is. In the passage we read we watched Jesus exercise His authority over the transition we call death.
When Jesus took that little girl’s hand in His and said, Talitha cumi (Little girl I say unto you arise) death had to relinquish its hold on her.
Jesus again unquestionably demonstrated His authority over death when He shrugged off its cold grip and walked out of His borrowed tomb on that first Easter Sunday morning.
Just before He raised His friend Lazarus from the dead Jesus gave a strong personal guarantee concerning His authority over death.
He said, Anyone who believes on me will never die.
That is the requirement for being a Christian - to live this life trusting in Jesus.
Mum clearly did that.
And so we are sure that having now left her old worn out body she is alive as I speak.
Little mum regularly prayed for her extended family.
The burden of her prayer was that each one of us would also trust in Jesus as she had and live for ever with her.
She also prayed for the people of Millom.
Today little mum has completed her journey and is enjoying her new life in the presence of Jesus.
I don’t know if she can pray for us now, but I know that her heart will still be yearning for all her family, and the people of Millom for whom she prayed, to be there with her in the fullness of time.
For mum’s and dads to put their own lives into the safe and loving hands of Jesus.
For them to teach the little ones to pray to and trust Him.
It takes but a few seconds to accept Jesus’ promise and know that you will live for ever with Him.
You just need to open your heart to Him and sincerely invite Him into your life to cleanse you and make you new. He will do that right away. Then, as you submit to Him, He will change your life into one of beauty - a life which will last for ever.
It is a binding, personal transaction between you and Jesus.
Once entered into you can be sure of living for ever in that beautiful place where little mum and Jesus are now.
Little mum would really love that - I am certain Jesus would too.
